Word of the Week #3 Ungulate

An ungulate is a mammal with hooves, e.g. the horse, rhinoceros, pig, giraffe, deer, or camel

I thought of this, after being at my Aunt Marion’s 96th birthday and we talked about Digger, the old horse that my Grandfather Jim rode down to the farm from the goldfields, many years ago.  That was about five years ago, because both my Aunt and Digger have now passed away.  Granddad had another old horse on his property in Welshpool, still alive when I was aged about ten; you could get on his back to ride him bareback if you could get him close to a fence; he ignored all attempts to get him to “giddyup” and he was totally indifferent to your presence, most of the time. His favourite trick was to bend his front knees just a little and then drop his head, so that you slid down his neck onto the ground.  Preferably far from the house, so that you had a long walk home.  He was an ungracious ungulate, in my mind.
